“We are far more valuable than most of us can possibly comprehend. Large sways of the multiverse might be meaningless”, says Brain Cox (professor of particle physics in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester).
“Our ways may not only matter on our local shores but beyond our world, even beyond our galaxy. Our lives are short, the lifetime of our civilisation is finite, but these pressures moment in cosmic time, bring meaning to an otherwise meaning less universe. We are remarkable structures composed of atoms as old as time. Meaning is located within us and it is our responsibility to cherish and protect it. One of the most eloquent expression of meaning of our finite life’s, can be heard in Gustave Mahler’s Symphony No 10.”
To me it always felt easy to create something decorative, beautiful, intelligent looking in whatever way you want to define those terms. It is equally easy to function in a more or less efficient way in most given structures. To create meaning is however a more complicated matter. Even though it is the always present criterium in decisions in my daily scrutiny of a making a painting, it still takes me a lot of time and distance to most worldly matters.
